How can the foodservice industry benefit from the increase in plant-based eating?
12 May 22
The UK has seen a huge boom in plant-based diets over the past 2 years, and the change in public opinion could see an even bigger increase in the number of people following a vegan/plant-based diet.
A survey completed by YouGov found that in 2019, only 2% of the UK population were following a plant-based diet, however as of December 2021, this number had risen to 8%, which marks an incredible 300% increase in just over 2 years.
It was also noted that much of the population are positively influenced to follow a plant-based diet based on the availability of these kinds of food when eating in public.
What does this mean for the foodservice industry?
These statistics present a favourable opportunity for restauranteurs, as it gives them the ability to broaden their menu offerings, and appeal to a wider market by adding plant-based dishes to their menus.
This in turn provides opportunities for commercial catering equipment suppliers, as many kitchens seek to duplicate their cooklines in order to avoid cross-contamination of vegan and non-vegan products.
Adding vegan items to your menu not only adds variety and choice for your customers, it also demonstrates an understanding and concern for sustainability, as studies show that vegan diets could cut down food-related carbon footprint by up to an astonishing 50%.
Furthermore, restaurant owners and chefs can benefit significantly from lower ingredient costs, if purchasing more plant-based products than meat, and increased shelf-life for the majority of vegan/vegetarian ingredients.
