How Global Cuisine is Taking Over the UK Food Scene
15 Jul 22
During the Pandemic, when travel was limited, many began to seek adventure through food, by straying from the usual comfort food, and reaching for more obscure global cuisine, in an attempt to experience exotic flavours from home. This led to an increase in the amount of global cuisines being offered, predominantly by takeaway restaurants.
When the world seemed to be returning to some sort of normality, the global cuisine offering did not slow down, instead it appeared to accelerate, in the forms of both takeaways and dine-in restaurants.
If we go back a few years to around 2015/2016, it was American burger/pizza chains and restaurants that dominated high streets and delivery apps such as JustEat, Deliveroo, UberEats etc. While these restaurants are still popular amongst many diners, the demand for much more niche cuisines, which are harder to find in the UK, has greatly increased. Research reveals that around 60% of consumers are now opting for venues that offer new and exciting cuisines, and around 53% of consumers will choose a new cuisine when they see it on a menu.
Caribbean, Korean, Japanese and Greek are amongst the cuisines that saw a huge rise in popularity throughout late 2021 and early 2022, and are expected to continue popping up across the UK. It is also estimated that we will begin to see cuisines such as Peruvian, Burmese, Filipino and Scandinavian on more consumers’ wishlists.
